Ice Cap Shaved Ice: Cooling Off Burgaw, One Snow Cone at a Time

“You'll know you've arrived when you're greeted by their cheeky mascot balancing a snow cone on his head at the door. ”

Meet Nicole and Alexander Shevchuk, the dynamic duo behind Burgaw's newest summer sensation, Ice Cap Shaved Ice. Originally hailing from New Jersey, Nicole and Alex have been proud residents of Burgaw for the past two years. But what inspired them to dive into the world of snow cones in our quaint town?

"We simply craved shaved ice in the hot North Carolina summers and were tired of going into Wilmington for just a cup or two," Nicole explains. Thus, the idea of Ice Cap was born.

The name itself has a whimsical story. "Alex chose a capybara as our mascot, and when he mentioned it, 'Ice Cap' just clicked in my mind," Nicole recalls. You'll know you've arrived when you're greeted by their cheeky mascot balancing a snow cone on his head at the door.

From idea to opening day, the journey was swift yet thoughtful. "We wanted to create something both needed in town and enjoyable for us to run," Alex notes. Once landing on the idea, the Shevchuk’s opened the doors of Ice Cap only two months later.

What sets Ice Cap apart? Quality. "We use top-of-the-line flavors and an ice shaver, and offer sugar-free and natural options to cater to different taste buds and dietary preferences."

As for flavors, there's something for everyone. With currently over 25 flavors available and plans to introduce even more, customers have the opportunity to customize their snow cones by selecting their preferred size and then flavoring it themselves at the syrup bar. The experience is totally interactive down to the tip jar where you can use your tip to vote on the most controversial issues like Star Wars v Star Trek or Donuts v Bagels.

For those who need a little guidance in the flavor department, Ice Cap offers suggested flavor combinations like “Upsidedown Cake” which is a mixture of wedding cake & fruit flavor or “Sour Patch” which includes sour green apple, mango and strawberry. Alex loves the sour green apple while Nicole prefers wedding cake.

As expected, the response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. "Burgaw has been incredibly supportive, and our business is steadily growing," Nicole beams.

Looking ahead, the Shevchuks are excited to expand their menu. "We're eager to introduce more flavors and toppings in our first year," Alex reveals.
